He lived in the US until he was ~14, right?

    Played at Atlanta's academy.

His mother is Rakel Karvelsson. A relatively well-remembered forward for UNC.
A super sub on powerhouse teams in the 90s. She represented Iceland, but was born and raised in the US. His father is also American.

This isn't a case of recruiting a kid with thin connections to the US.

yeah that’s the thing that surprised me too. I remember the names and I remember Lyon was NOT in the list. France doing thee reverse if England and going for the big clubs first I guess

If the Premier League's tv deals collapsed like Ligue 1s did, they'd all be filing for bankruptcy too.

    It won't happen.

14 seems to roughly be the age he went over. He definitely has very real ties to Iceland but also a player who was born in Houston and spent some years in Atlanta (and even played in Atlanta’s youth academy for a bit).

They ended up with €660 million per season which is only an 11% drop on last season. If they went out and budgeted on a potential €1 billion per season it's their own fault. I think there's more to it than that.

Bordeaux were asset stripped. I don't think Lyon's case is that much different. Their owners cut the development system to save money in the short-term and brought in experienced players on high salaries who haven't delivered.

Part of the problem is trying to play keep up with PSG who are owned by a freaking country.

Seems their federation should work with their government for a temporary solution. Especially since this was a TV deal collapse and COVID problem that were temporary and not something that's been going on forever.

PSG are going to be a freaking problem for the health of that league. Only team with the remote spending capacity to contend is Monaco. There is no finance chasm in any league like psg and the rest of ligue 1.

the only thing saving Lyon is a middle eastern buyer……. Which I guess is always possible. But status quo ……they’re boned Bordeaux style……. And I’m still more upset than I should be that Liverpool- Bordeaux relationship a la Chelsea stratsbourg fell through
