In my sources, Frank Arnesen had an extremely high average mark in his three games. What did you find there?
France Football ratings : (as seen previously, Maradona actually was rated three times with a 5-star rating, not two, as listed here in the FF issue of the 1st July)
Indeed, Arnesen's averages were truly brilliant. I set a minimum of 270 minutes to be part of my main list, so although he was close to this mark (253 minutes) he appears on my secondary list. France Football was the most generous publication with his participation (8.00 according to the scale I used to convert the scores to a scale up to 10); for Mundo Deportivo, 7.67; for El Gráfico 7.33; for Gazzetta dello Sport and Sofascore, 7.17; Marca and Guerin Sportivo, 7; Clarín, 6.67; for As and Solofútbol, 6.33. All this results in an overall average of 7.09, the best in this "secondary list", 17 hundredths better than the second ranked, the Scottish Strachan.
I think this gives some insight into how FF evaluated 'assists' maybe, as for example I guess Ceulemans isn't credited with one here (because of the quality of the finish by Vercauteren?) 1986 Frank Vercauteren Paraguay Belgium (youtube.com) Assuming he is credited with one here, for the Scifo goal 1986 (June 8) Belgium 2-Iraq 1 (World Cup).mpg (youtube.com) Laudrup is credited with 2 assists vs Uruguay, because he initiated an Elkjaer tap-in with a solo run I think: 1986 (June 8) Denmark 6-Uruguay 1 (World Cup).mpg (youtube.com) (1:57) Planet World Cup counts all those as assists. OPTA wouldn't count the second Laudrup one i suppose.... That's unless they mis-counted for Ceulemans of course. I suppose the reason a different grade could have been shown on Everyfourthyear (that we saw previously) to an actual grade is because they printed out the numbers of stars as stars, and didn't write numbers (some of the older ones we found could be hard to read, on the internet at least, plus the number of stars could be accidentally mis-counted by somebody reading occasionally). Re: Elkjaer vs Scotland potentially for example.... EDIT - When I said "I suppose" OPTA wouldn't credit Laudrup with the second 'assist' to Elkjaer I should have said "we know", and obviously we can see it on Sofascore's page too (based on OPTA's data) Michael Laudrup stats and ratings | Sofascore Jan Ceulemans stats and ratings | Sofascore
Interesting though @wm442433 that they do list Elkajer with 18 etoiles overall - could it suggest they did intend to give 6 stars vs Scotland even though they didn't print that (and didn't list him with a 6 star performance at the end)? Tom's total was 18 that he counted up from what was on Everyfourthyear I think too....
6 vs Uruguay then (maybe that was what was shown on Everyfourthyear too originally actually was it? - I can't recall for definite right now but I think it rings a bell/makes sense). wm442433 did suggest he saw that the Uruguay grade was also printed as a 5 in France Football though (and the summary doesn't show Elkjaer with a 6 at the end, among the 6-star performances printed)....
@Tom Stevens @comme @Titanlux @PDG1978 Yes, excuse me to have complicated things, it is well a 6 against Uruguay, in the second match. Which is missing in the summary, that's all. I read too quickly the match report without zooming. (I don't have much time to watch the assists atm)
At the end of the round of 16, the "Etoiles team" was : Schumacher (22) - G.Stevens (19), J.César (20), Bossis (24), Amoros (25) - Burruchaga (20), Tigana (20), Ceulemans (21), Maradona (23) - Careca (20), Lineker (20). And the podium was about the same as in the end : Amoros (25), Bossis (24), Maradona (23). Schumacher and Pfaff (22). Ceulemans (21).
In this photo, the "disappointing", "favorite" and "revelation" teams are written according to the following newspapers, and the players who will be "disappointing" for them are also written.
