Van Basten had 7.2 in 1988 from Guerin Sportivo, including the first USSR game (7.5 without it):
The best players of Euro 88 | BigSoccer Forum

EDIT - Tigana has the highest France Football average, along with Elkjaer, in 1984 I suppose, but just as with World Cup ratings the marking out of 6 system may play a part to an extent in the outcomes there (but it seems logical to think if the same journalists rated performances out of 10 they'd still have had Platini a little behind Tigana overall). Tigana's average with CdS is in between the Zidane and Bergkamp ones from 2000 though isn't it....

Unfortunately, for the 1988 European Championships, Corriere della Sera uses a different evaluation system than usual, so it becomes a bit difficult to compare it with other evaluations.

    1980

EURO 1980 Our trip down the EURO memory lane starts with the earliest one for which we have in-depth data available, the 1980 tournament held in Italy. A brief EURO 1980 data overview is in the thread below!

Where else to start but with our highest-rated XI? Champions West Germany are the only side represented by three players, as Karlheinz Förster, Klaus Allofs and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge all got into this team. In total, 6 out of 8 teams see at least one player featured!

Luis Arconada at EURO 1980: 3 appearances 1 clean sheet 17 saves (2nd) 11 saved shots from inside the box (1st) 8.10 avg Sofascore Rating (1st) Despite Spain not getting past the group stage, their goalkeeper was our highest-rated player of the tournament.

Only the second-ever hat-trick in EURO history, in West Germany's 3–2 group stage win over the Netherlands, was enough for Klaus Allofs to be the tournament's leading goalscorer. Behind him, two goals from Horst Hrubesch were particularly important, as they came in the final.

When it comes to the best playmakers at the tournament, plenty of famous names occupy the top spots, with no one particularly standing out above the rest. Stay tuned for tomorrow, when we'll take a look at EURO 1984!

EURO 1984 In 1984, UEFA EURO was held in France for the first time since the inaugural 1960 edition. Dive into in-depth data from the tournament which saw France win their first continental title in this thread!

Where else to start from but the incredible Michel Platini? 5 appearances ⚽️ 9 goals (1st) 2 free-kick goals (1st) ️ 1 assist 11 key passes (3rd) ♻️ 31 ball recoveries (3rd) 8.30 avg Sofascore Rating (1st) Unsurprisingly, he was our highest-rated player at EURO 1984.

Platini was part of a hugely impressive midfield trio, alongside Jean Tigana and Alain Giresse, that led France to victory on home soil. Portugal's GK Manuel Bento deserves a mention due to his heroics, which almost stopped France in the semifinal (3–2 defeat after extra time)!

Alain Giresse, Jean Tigana and Michael Laudrup stand out as the best playmakers of EURO 1984, with the Dane collecting all of his three assists in a 5–0 group stage win over Yugoslavia.

As if we didn't mention him enough before, Jean Tigana also stood out as far and away the best duel-winner at the entire tournament. France's legendary midfielder truly had a summer to remember.

Finally, our Team of the Tournament is made up of players from each of the four semifinalists!

Platini's rating would have been higher if they did count BCC stats for french players in semi-finals.. as i remember he created 2 or 3 big chances against portugal.

EURO 1988 Today we're looking back at the first European Championship held on German soil (then hosted by West Germany)! Our overview of EURO 1988 | A thread

When you think of EURO 1988, you think of Marco van Basten: 5 appearances ⚽️ 5 goals (1st) 2.6 shots p/g ️ 1 assist 13 key passes (2nd) 79% dribbling success rate (2nd) 7.92 avg Sofascore Rating (1st) Our highest-rated player of the tournament.

Speaking of Marco van Basten... Having earlier provided an assist to Ruud Gullit for the Dutch opener, in the 54th minute of the EURO 1988 final he scored one of the most memorable goals in the football history.

Whichever list you look at, it's dominated by the Dutch! Oranje truly balled out in 1988, with some legendary names from other countries joining the likes of van Basten, Rijkaard, Gullit & co. among the stat leaders at the tournament.

The Dutch dominance is even further emphasised in our list of the ten highest-rated players at EURO 1988. The fact that more than half of them are from the Netherlands tells you all you need to know about how good they were!

Finally, our highest-rated XI is once again full of Oranje stars. EURO 1988 is truly a tournament that will forever be remembered for the Dutch 'Totaalvoetbal', masterminded by their coach, Rinus Michels.

    -------------------------------------------------------------

This has many very intriguing things:

    - Van Basten his heatmap and high dribble success rate (2.2 dribbles per game; per 90 minutes will bump it up)
    - Still some 'luck' and fortune was needed.
    - The relatively unknown Vanenburg won the EC that year, Erwin Koeman the CWC with Mechelen. Both go into the team of the tournament.
    - Still not entirely convinced of Michels; he only won one trophy when Cruijff was not involved in some way (with setting up La Masia etc.). The DFB Pokal with Cologne in 1983.

It seems like for Van Basten the overall CdS average would be 6.95 including the first USSR game (with a 6 for the second half and therefore overall in that game) and 7.1875 without it (with 7.875 as his 'second halves' average without that game).

EURO 1992 It's time to take a look at the final European Championship which featured only eight teams, and one of the last official competitions before the introduction of the back-pass rule! Overview of EURO 1992 | A thread

EURO 1992 will forever be remembered for Denmark's remarkable title win, having only found out they'll take part 10 days before the tournament was to start. It's therefore not surprising to see their legendary shot-stopper topping our list of highest-rated players

Peter Schmeichel was on another level in Sweden in the summer of 1992: 5 apps 5.4 saves p/g (1st) 2.8 saved shots from inside the box p/g (1st) ✅ 87% save percentage (1st) 2 clean sheets 7.86 avg Sofascore Rating (1st) Our highest-rated player at EURO 1992.

Schmeichel was far from the only standout Denmark player that summer, however. A true team effort saw Henrik Larsen and Flemming Povlsen top the goalscoring and assist charts, while Brian Laudrup and Povlsen were the only players with more than 20 completed dribbles.

Having only gone out to Denmark via the penalty shootout in the semifinal, the defending champions Netherlands saw a whopping six of their players featured in our TOTT. It's only fitting that the man who saved the only penalty in that shootout is between the sticks here!

I'll probably keep on repping another couple or so of those posts Puck I guess, assuming they'll continue.

I'll say anyway also kudos to Sofascore for creating them; we all probably have reservations to some extent about just blindly using their calculated grades without any caveats, but they're interesting to see as is for sure the wider data and analysis.

    1996

EURO 1996 The first EURO tournament to feature 16 teams, the first golden goal in EURO history, the famous 'It's coming home' song...the European Championship held in England sure lives long in the memory of all football fans! Our stat overview follows below.

One of the most memorable EURO moments ever came in the semifinal — as hosts held hopes of winning it all, they were stopped by Andreas Köpke, who saved Gareth Southgate's shootout penalty. Germans went on to lift the trophy, while England's trophy drought continues to this day.

Something to provide comfort for England could be that several of their stars were in truly outstanding from on home soil, with four of them placing themselves among the six highest-rated players at the tournament! However, the top spot could only go to one man.

Matthias Sammer at EURO 1996: 6 appearances ⚽️ 2 goals 89.8 touches p/g (1st) 57.7 accurate passes p/g (2nd) 34 tackles (2nd) ⚔️ 67% duel success rate 7.87 avg Sofascore Rating (1st) A key man for the champions and our highest-rated player at the tournament.

Alan Shearer became only the third player ever to score at least five goals at a single EURO tournament in 1996, as he scored in all but one of England's five matches at the tournament. To this day, he remains the only Englishman to score five goals at a single EURO!

Finally, all of the best performers at EURO 1996 also found their way into our highest-rated XI! Alongside already mentioned Germany and England, Croatia, knocked out by Germany in QF on their first-ever EURO appearance, also see some familiar names featured.

Ah, no, sorry this post was a bit hasty!

I looked accidentally at the Van Basten England grades as being his overall tournament grades (and only at the first USSR game one as being a match-specific grade) for some reason.

I'll make another post soon! Thanks for the rep @Kroos46 although you might be realising my post is wrong by now I guess!

    2000

EURO 2000 The first European Championship to be hosted by more than one country and a tournament that featured goals, goals and more goals, EURO 2000 was quite something! Our brief overview of the tournament is in the thread below.

Dennis Bergkamp at EURO 2000: 5 appearances ️ 3 assists (2nd) 5 big chances created (1st) 19 key passes (1st) 14/22 successful dribbles (3rd) 8.26 avg Sofascore Rating (1st) There was little doubt when it comes to our highest-rated player at the tournament.

Man who ultimately stopped the Bergkamp-led Netherlands in the semifinal shootout, Francesco Toldo, follows the Dutch genius in our highest-rated player list. Zinedine Zidane, the champions' hero, completes the top three.

Two years after winning the World Cup on home soil, France made history after becoming the first-ever reigning world champions to win the European Championship. Super-sub David Trezeguet scored the 'golden goal' — the trophy was won as soon as the ball hit the net!

Talk about a star-studded team! Our highest-rated XI from EURO 2000 features players from six different teams and includes several true legends of the sport. ⭐️

I suppose with Euro 96 the players that played 3 times but went out at the group stage can't be included in their analysis and rankings; for example Brian Laudrup with an average of 8.00....

You need to play at least 60% of the total amount of minutes. For that reason there is also no Schuster 1980 or Rooney 2004.

So yeah, sorry, the true average for Van Basten, combining 1st and 2nd half grades from CdS, seems to be, if adding/subtracting 0.25 for a + or - which might be questionable itself, more like 6.42 if using the 9 halves he played in and dividing by 9 (a little lower if combining each half into a full game grade including the 6 for the first one).

Taking out the first game completely (even if it might seem less necessary if already using half game grades) would seem to make it more like 6.47.

So quite a bit lower than the Guerin Sportivo grades, but yeah maybe that new system CdS introduced is not really comparable with the normal system of giving a grade for the whole game exactly (and therefore not comparable exactly with the GdS grades from other Euros). I did happen to try some grades myself half a game at a time and I tend to think it's natural to make a final grade a little above the average of the two halves (with a kind of cumulative/overall aspect to it), although I didn't tend to decide on second half grades but just first half ones and final ones (I assume the second column of CdS is not meant to show their final grades though, but the second half ones as it seems clearly labelled that way anyway).

Van Basten is rated joint 2nd vs Germany, 1st vs England, seemingly joint 1st among Dutch players excluding Kieft vs Ireland, but only about 6th among Dutch players and something like joint 8th overall for the Final I see (if combining 1st and 2nd half grades).

But yeah, I see what you mean, it's complicated!

    This is really weird grading.

Sofascore has him as the best outfield player in the final (and they do factor in location on the pitch). A point higher than anyone else of either team, including Dasaev (7.0, third of his team). Van Breukelen is just ahead (also interesting, apparently he did some stuff right and not merely saving a penalty).

On the eye I thought Gullit (some nice drives, a free kick) and to a lesser extent Rijkaard had a case too but 6th of his team? I can't see that. Take out the wonder goal and there is still an assist and some other good moves as well. Including one dribble where he is taken down eventually.

If 2004 and later tournaments surface I will post that as well.

    Some other tidbits they have shown;

    Platini his shot locations

There are four players with a perfect 10 rating since 1980.

Michel Platini v Belgium at EURO 1984: 120 touches ⚽️ 3 goals 5 shots/3 on target 1 big chance created 4 key passes 7/9 accurate long balls 70/84 accurate passes ⚔️ 13/20 duels won 4 interceptions 6 tackles 10 Sofascore Rating The legendary Frenchman…

Francesco Toldo v Belgium at EURO 2000: 11 saves 5 saved shots from inside the box 2 punches 1 clean sheet 50 touches 11/35 accurate long balls 10 Sofascore Rating The only goalkeeper with a perfect Sofascore in EURO history!

David Villa v Russia (group stage) at EURO 2008: 58 touches ⚽️ 3 goals 8 shots/5 on target 4 key passes 24/34 accurate passes 2/3 successful dribbles ⚔️ 9/17 duels won 5 fouls suffered 10 Sofascore Rating Talk about starring in the tournament opener!

Eden Hazard v Hungary at EURO 2016: 74 touches ⚽️ 1 goal 3 shots/2 on target ️ 1 assist 4 key passes 43/48 accurate passes 12/13 successful dribbles ⚔️ 15/16 duels won 10 Sofascore Rating The *only* perfect rating in a EURO knockout stage match since 1980.

(why was Russia 2008 suddenly so energetic, which the data also clearly shows, against Netherlands in the quarter final? )

Two players with 10 key passes in a match. Sneijder vs Denmark 2012 and McAllister vs Germany in 1992.

Most successful dribbles in a final:

(the 2000 and 2016 finals went to extra time, of course; Henry has an average rating of 7.34 in 2000. His highest is 7.9 vs Denmark, followed by 7.5 vs Portugal in the semi final; vs Italy in the final is 7.3)

Unfortunately they haven't shown euro 2004 and further so far. We have to wait.

I also saw this now (from a time when only the top four qualified, and yes JC14 didn't always play; the group stage for euro 76 was extremely hard, and there he did play a lot).

Admittedly by a Cruijff fan and 'believer' (seem he is even more than me, haha, but looks legit and honest/transparant - some nice compilations there like him tricking legendary defenders like Moore, or a first touch compilation). @comme @PDG1978

Also feel that right now Modric deserves a place somewhere in the top 50. With the 2008 Germany and 2012 Spain (with penalty incident, retaking incident) games in mind. Hard to say. Those 2008 and 2012 games are perhaps more impressive than any of the 2018 KO games (in the group stage then the Argentina match, yes, against an Argentina that looked paralyzed at times).

Often we only reward the one with succes and final places (I'd have Bergkamp over Koeman in comme his list for sure, and see the idea for putting him ahead of Gullit as well, just for euros - as overall player they are tied for me but you already knew that).

Also feel and think we can put Van Dijk #1 for center backs since 1992. He didn't win a lot no (a hair removed from 3 CL and 3 leagues - maybe if Man City gets punished he'll get those two medals?) but you can say something like that as well about Moore, Matthews, Charlton, Garrincha, Best, Baggio, Ronaldo Nazario, Maradona (at club level at least). To name just a few who are regularly placed top 30-40 all-time across all positions. So it is not everything, in particular if you are part of the bigger markets (linguistic areas). But I will make that qualified and somewhat uncertain case in the appropriate thread.
