Van Basten had 7.2 in 1988 from Guerin Sportivo, including the first USSR game (7.5 without it): The best players of Euro 88 | BigSoccer Forum EDIT - Tigana has the highest France Football average, along with Elkjaer, in 1984 I suppose, but just as with World Cup ratings the marking out of 6 system may play a part to an extent in the outcomes there (but it seems logical to think if the same journalists rated performances out of 10 they'd still have had Platini a little behind Tigana overall). Tigana's average with CdS is in between the Zidane and Bergkamp ones from 2000 though isn't it....
Unfortunately, for the 1988 European Championships, Corriere della Sera uses a different evaluation system than usual, so it becomes a bit difficult to compare it with other evaluations.

A brief EURO 1980 data overview is in the thread below! Where else to start but with our highest-rated XI? Champions West Germany are the only side represented by three players, as Karlheinz Förster, Klaus Allofs and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge all got into this team. In total, 6 out of 8 teams see at least one player featured! Behind him, two goals from Horst Hrubesch were particularly important, as they came in the final. When it comes to the best playmakers at the tournament, plenty of famous names occupy the top spots, with no one particularly standing out above the rest. Portugal's GK Manuel Bento deserves a mention due to his heroics, which almost stopped France in the semifinal (3–2 defeat after extra time)! Alain Giresse, Jean Tigana and Michael Laudrup stand out as the best playmakers of EURO 1984, with the Dane collecting all of his three assists in a 5–0 group stage win over Yugoslavia. As if we didn't mention him enough before, Jean Tigana also stood out as far and away the best duel-winner at the entire tournament. France's legendary midfielder truly had a summer to remember. Finally, our Team of the Tournament is made up of players from each of the four semifinalists!
Platini's rating would have been higher if they did count BCC stats for french players in semi-finals.. as i remember he created 2 or 3 big chances against portugal.

Having earlier provided an assist to Ruud Gullit for the Dutch opener, in the 54th minute of the EURO 1988 final he scored one of the most memorable goals in the football history. Whichever list you look at, it's dominated by the Dutch! Oranje truly balled out in 1988, with some legendary names from other countries joining the likes of van Basten, Rijkaard, Gullit & co. among the stat leaders at the tournament. The Dutch dominance is even further emphasised in our list of the ten highest-rated players at EURO 1988. The fact that more than half of them are from the Netherlands tells you all you need to know about how good they were! Finally, our highest-rated XI is once again full of Oranje stars. It seems like for Van Basten the overall CdS average would be 6.95 including the first USSR game (with a 6 for the second half and therefore overall in that game) and 7.1875 without it (with 7.875 as his 'second halves' average without that game).

Having only gone out to Denmark via the penalty shootout in the semifinal, the defending champions Netherlands saw a whopping six of their players featured in our TOTT. I'll probably keep on repping another couple or so of those posts Puck I guess, assuming they'll continue. I'll say anyway also kudos to Sofascore for creating them; we all probably have reservations to some extent about just blindly using their calculated grades without any caveats, but they're interesting to see as is for sure the wider data and analysis.

One of the most memorable EURO moments ever came in the semifinal — as hosts held hopes of winning it all, they were stopped by Andreas Köpke, who saved Gareth Southgate's shootout penalty. Germans went on to lift the trophy, while England's trophy drought continues to this day. Something to provide comfort for England could be that several of their stars were in truly outstanding from on home soil, with four of them placing themselves among the six highest-rated players at the tournament! However, the top spot could only go to one man. I looked accidentally at the Van Basten England grades as being his overall tournament grades (and only at the first USSR game one as being a match-specific grade) for some reason. I suppose with Euro 96 the players that played 3 times but went out at the group stage can't be included in their analysis and rankings; for example Brian Laudrup with an average of 8.00....
You need to play at least 60% of the total amount of minutes. For that reason there is also no Schuster 1980 or Rooney 2004.
So yeah, sorry, the true average for Van Basten, combining 1st and 2nd half grades from CdS, seems to be, if adding/subtracting 0.25 for a + or - which might be questionable itself, more like 6.42 if using the 9 halves he played in and dividing by 9 (a little lower if combining each half into a full game grade including the 6 for the first one). Taking out the first game completely (even if it might seem less necessary if already using half game grades) would seem to make it more like 6.47. So quite a bit lower than the Guerin Sportivo grades, but yeah maybe that new system CdS introduced is not really comparable with the normal system of giving a grade for the whole game exactly (and therefore not comparable exactly with the GdS grades from other Euros). I did happen to try some grades myself half a game at a time and I tend to think it's natural to make a final grade a little above the average of the two halves (with a kind of cumulative/overall aspect to it), although I didn't tend to decide on second half grades but just first half ones and final ones (I assume the second column of CdS is not meant to show their final grades though, but the second half ones as it seems clearly labelled that way anyway). Van Basten is rated joint 2nd vs Germany, 1st vs England, seemingly joint 1st among Dutch players excluding Kieft vs Ireland, but only about 6th among Dutch players and something like joint 8th overall for the Final I see (if combining 1st and 2nd half grades). But yeah, I see what you mean, it's complicated!
Yeah, same as for World Cups I think isn't it (but the excluded players can show up in specific stats lists still).
Yes, the ratings are unfortunately divided into first and second half, so it is quite difficult to compare. Great work anyway.
This is really weird grading. Sofascore has him as the best outfield player in the final (and they do factor in location on the pitch). A point higher than anyone else of either team, including Dasaev (7.0, third of his team). Van Breukelen is just ahead (also interesting, apparently he did some stuff right and not merely saving a penalty). On the eye I thought Gullit (some nice drives, a free kick) and to a lesser extent Rijkaard had a case too but 6th of his team? I can't see that. Take out the wonder goal and there is still an assist and some other good moves as well. Including one dribble where he is taken down eventually. If 2004 and later tournaments surface I will post that as well.

With the 2008 Germany and 2012 Spain (with penalty incident, retaking incident) games in mind. Hard to say. Those 2008 and 2012 games are perhaps more impressive than any of the 2018 KO games (in the group stage then the Argentina match, yes, against an Argentina that looked paralyzed at times). Often we only reward the one with succes and final places (I'd have Bergkamp over Koeman in comme his list for sure, and see the idea for putting him ahead of Gullit as well, just for euros - as overall player they are tied for me but you already knew that). Also feel and think we can put Van Dijk #1 for center backs since 1992. He didn't win a lot no (a hair removed from 3 CL and 3 leagues - maybe if Man City gets punished he'll get those two medals?) but you can say something like that as well about Moore, Matthews, Charlton, Garrincha, Best, Baggio, Ronaldo Nazario, Maradona (at club level at least). To name just a few who are regularly placed top 30-40 all-time across all positions. So it is not everything, in particular if you are part of the bigger markets (linguistic areas). But I will make that qualified and somewhat uncertain case in the appropriate thread.
