I think for 2003/04 in general yes; at the Euros and at the start of 04/05 too a little bit (to do with injury/fitness) Henry was not so good though (he says himself too).

 

I think that was also mainly because of the start of 96/97 (which was still quite good for Weah for example, but at that moment Ronaldo was really big in the game with what he was doing at Barcelona).....

Re 2004, I feel you almost answered your own question, Valencia won what they did that year through the collective and a number of players playing at a high level and not a single player dragging them to the title i.e Ayala, Mista, Aimar and so on were all very high etc..

Mendieta and Kily Gonzalez had gone by then so they are nothing to do with this conversation.

Ronaldinho whilst not winning anything for Barcelona was standing out with some amazing performances for Barcelona as they finished second in La Liga so on an individual basis warrants praise.

I do feel however his FIFA PoY 04 win and high Ballon d d'or finish (3rd) was elevated due to his start at the stat of the 04/05 season.

 

Real Madrid and Barcelona players are overrated in Ballon d'Or sense, at least this century. Simply they are more mediatic teams, they more watched.

Yes, it seems feasible to think that during 1986 Gullit was perhaps the 2nd best player in the world (behind Maradona).

These things you mention had some influence on my decision for 1985/86 + 1986 (where my top 5 vote was Maradona-Lineker-Gullit-Elkjaer-Michael Laudrup).
