During Arena, my anticipation level for upcoming games was growing again, after years and years of erosion. I’m now back below my all time low in interest. The Porter led Revolution have a steep hill to climb. I just don’t feel they will play, win, lose or tie, anything other than fractured, backward ball.
As a Crew fan I’ve seen it , that’s what happens they switch and back pass a lot and lack creativity. It’s a Porter issue , he needs to have better talent for his system to work and it doesn’t include young players very often. He has a pompous attitude and he is very hard to like as a person. He has won a lot but he hasn’t won consistently in MLS. I think Arena was the coach you should have kept. I think you guys will be calling for Porters head by seasons end. This is most likely Caleb’s last opportunity and the East is very competitive. I think you will get more points and improve from last year but still probably miss the playoffs or at best sneak in only to exit early. You guys deserve better.
Highlight of the game: The crowd audibly booing (on the TV broadcast) when the Revs destroyed their own attack (around the 87th minute, I think) with three consecutive back-passes. We are in for some excruciatingly boring soccer games this season. The defense has improved - which is nice, I guess - but the attack looks even worse than last year's. And the blame has got to be on Porter. Every player on the field, except Gil, seems to prioritize the safe pass every single time. And I'm all for a possession-based style, but (a) we're still not technically skilled enough to do it, and (b) even when you prioritize possession, you do it for the purpose of eventually creating space in the opposition's final third - and then attacking that space so you can score a goal! Sometimes, it's like our entire gameplan doesn't even consider creating chances as a factor... Also...If I'm not mistaken, the Revs didn't complete a single pass until the 6:30 mark. That's gotta be some kind of record. Oh, and while I'm complaining... How is MLS the only league in the world that hasn't realized that, in soccer broadcasting, you don't ignore the live action to show replays or close-ups? And it's gonna be worse this year, since the "AT&T Net Cam" is clearly a required sponsorship thing.
What a horrible game. At half time, the xG was 0.05 to 0.05. Final was 0.3 (CLB) to 0.1. Pathetic. The Revs had 2 shots on goal: Campana's right into the GK when they were only a foot apart, and Urruti's weak roller in stoppage time. They had more crosses (6) than shots (5). I can't take any more of Porter's slow, plodding offense. Porter out! Only NE, Nashville and STL (plus LAG who play tonight) are scoreless this season. And I apologize for saying the curse of VAR was over last week. I jinxed it.
Hey, everyone be reasonable, he just put all these guys together! He requires some time. Say 64 games to get them to jell. It's totally unfair to judge until around game 50... (do I have to clearly state that is sarcasm?) So far it is SSDS (same sh*t, different season). Lather rinse and repeat.
I think the what got me annoyed the most is; how many times did Revs players either run into each other or one simply stood there as a teammate ran into them?? Are they just learning to play the game?
Two things that struck me aside from the cold, and the wind and boy did I mention how cold and windy it was? One, the Crew are a much better team than the Revs to the point where it's kind of impressive that they only got one goal. Two, from the time Urruti came on the Revs actually looked somewhat coherent in attack (a low bar, but still...). Since Urruti himself didn't do all that much, I concluded that it was Jackon Yueill's departure that made the difference.
My wife, who is not a huge soccer fan, says last night nothing has changed from last year, they still only pass backwards or sideways. And I see that Bruce is 2-0. #PorterOut #OnalfoOut
Less than 1 xG from 180 minutes. Meanwhile fully reconstructed teams like SJ and SD are rolling without issues. It's not a gel time. It's Porter. Get him out (and send Yueill with him)
unfortunately it's the Revs. We are going to have to endure several more weeks of lack luster performances before the FO realizes they are in last place .
It's not just Porter, it begins in the corner office. Kraft obviously doesn't give a $hit. There's no discernable pressure to improve. There are literally thousands of good soccer players in the world, and most of the other MLS teams have seemed to acquire some of them. Not us. I could name names, but why bother. Oh, I believe that the guys on the field are doing their best, but it's a pretty droopy best. This whole lack of concern from anyone on the top floor makes me pray for the adoption of pro-rel. Maybe getting kicked out of the league might convince the decision makers to seriously consider some other line of work.. If we stay away Bobby might sell his operation, or fold the team. I'm beginning to think that might not be unthinkable, or undesirable. Somebody else might GAS!
So what happened on the non-PK in the second half? I only saw the high (low) light clip, and they said "...And he's pointing to the spot!" as a bunch of Columbus players were arguing that it hit him in the ribs, below the arm. Was it VAR-red off? Might be nice if they said so! They just went on as if nothing happened and so much for any hope of an equalizer.... I'll be coming to the Philly game next week, but man, they put 4 past Cincy and we haven't even scored yet in 2 games. I have a feeling it's going to be real ugly...
in my opinion the replay was inconclusive, No real angle to see, looked like it hit the inside of his arm or back of his arm. PK should have stood
Yes, the ref made the announcement after VAR, but his mic wasn't working, so no one knew what the decision was. It did look like the ball hit his side, but it also deflected slightly downward, which indicates to me that it at least grazed the bottom of his arm. But the way the offense played, they didn't deserve a PK, so justice was served.
Meanwhile Arena has six points, six different goal scorers, and only 1 goal allowed with a team that gave up a league record 78 goals last year. Hmmmm....
