They likely checked field mikes during the stoppage. That’s why it took so long. It would’ve been punished in the moment. Not finding anything definitive they let the game play out. As for next steps as this isn’t an MLS single entity exhibition event, not sure what the process is.
Hoping for two MLS/Liga MX matchups in the semifinals for the storylines, but honestly it will probably only be the winner of the Columbus/LAFC and Miami matchup...I'd watch the heck out of a Miami/Monterrey and Cincinnati/America semifinal.
Colorado Rapids, Concacaf And Reporters Fumble Possible Racism Claim ByIan Nicholas Quillen, Contributor. Forbes
yeah. I think if there was actually anyone else you could back the claim or some proof there would’ve been a more definitive statement from CO or CONCACAF. If there isn’t proof other than the player’s statement I’m not sure what the next steps are as this isn’t MLS.
If MLS doesn't have an anti-racism "respect" program for players it should implement one. There are players from countries where you can routinely get away with stuff that's not acceptable in a multi-cultural/multi-racial environment. There are also different interpretations of words in different languages. To use a fairly innocuous example, "fanny" applies to different ends of the perineum on different sides of the Atlantic.
Rough article calling out the press given the immediate work by the Denver Post and Burgundy Wave reporters last night.
First there was Rapids manager Chris Armas, who waited for a question on the incident before addressing the issue. When asked to explain what happened, his answer was disappointingly vague. “It was an incident that happened on the field,” Armas said. “Our player, Chidozie Awaziem, was pretty clear and upset at a derogatory term that he said – look he was clear about what was said, and to not say everything, our club, myself are fully behind our players. We’ll support him with any investigation (that) will further find out what exactly went down. But he was visibly upset, and that was the stoppage." I think that’s pretty clear, not vague at all. Just because the specific slur isn’t named, doesn’t mean Armas’ statement is incomplete. And the reporter was able to glean more than me when the incident occurred since I thought it was a foul that had gone unpunished. Just because no one is naming the words used, doesn’t mean they are worth repeating for posterity’s sake. Thx, Jay!
"Why, that sounds a lot like DEI, so we cannot have that!" some people on the internet and, apparently, the official policy of the US Federal Government. And people have to learn the usage of those words in the environment where they are playing. See, Dante Vanzeir and his racism when playing for NYRB. In his second match for NYRB, he called the ref (or certain San Jose players) "monkey." He claimed he was using the term to mean "clown" or "dummy," but either 1) he is an ignorant fool or 2) a liar. Take your pick. I suspect the latter, since that particular racist slur is even more prevalent in Europe than the US.
that may be true but if it cannot be corroborated then nothing will come of it. That’s why these things are so difficult to deal with.
I mean its not that difficult to teach people some basics. Nearly every company in the US has a respect program to avoid lawsuits. I once upset an Asian-American friend by using the term "Chinaman" on Facebook. I had no idea it was offensive. I was using it as a cricket term.
I’m not saying that it’s not. I’m saying the reporter is being obtuse. It’s pretty clear what Armas said. Not vague at all. Thx, Jay!
And Burgundy Wave, one of those reporters the writer criticized, had an even more complete statement from Armas. https://burgundywave.com/2025/02/26/chido-awaziem-derogatory-term-sergi-palencia-lafc/ (I'll also point out the Burgundy Wave is a second job for the guys involved, including Matt who was at the game last night, and completely funded by Patreon-style donations)
