The Daily Mail are having a right go at the FA, Carsley and Tuchel on the back page for tomorrow’s edition. It’s going to be two years of them being very negative.
The situation is a farce though. It’s nothing to do with Tuchel or whatever happens with his reign. Appointing him and then leaving him out of the loop for months. They’ve completely screwed up the timing of the appointment.
My guess is that if the Greece match went well they might not have announced it until after these matches. As it would been more controversial had it gone well to then go immediately for Tuchel. That Greece defeat helped the FA a lot with the optics of it.

The FA really should have just paid Tuchel whatever money he wanted and had him start now. And if he didn’t just hired someone else. They have just made things a lot worse for themselves and him by not doing so. Every article about the pullouts is blaming the FA and Tuchel alone - clubs are being justified and defended.
It is an absurd situation - a big fanfare followed by 5 months of suspended animation. 1856257626193224109 is not a valid tweet id Why has Tuchel done this? It has nothing to do with money and his contract at Bayern Munich, the club he left in the summer, or even, as has been suggested, to avoid the controversy over whether he will or will not wear a poppy this month (he wore one when he was Chelsea manager and will be England manager next November). No, instead it is because Tuchel himself regards a New Year’s Day start as cleaner. He believes it gives him a defined 18-month period in which he can hit the ground running and get his messages across more effectively. He believes he is not a long-term project manager but one who can come in and get the job done with his intense methods – and that job is to win the next World Cup. Nothing else will do. And the other reason? His trusted assistant Anthony Barry is not free to join him until the turn of the year and he is still assembling his backroom staff. The highly-rated Liverpudlian coach is currently working as Roberto Martínez’s No 2 with Portugal, having fulfilled the same role for him with Belgium at the last World Cup. Barry assisted Tuchel at Chelsea and also at Bayern. Maybe there is logic in this. But time is of the essence and, unfortunately, it gives the impression that England are just marking time right now.
Luck of the draw Fifa’s decision to have the European qualifying draw for the 2026 World Cup as a studio event in Zurich on December 13 without national team coaches attending saves the English FA from a tricky decision about who should represent them as Thomas Tuchel will not have taken over by then. The draw for next year’s 32-team Club World Cup will be a similar studio-based event in Miami on December 5, and participating clubs such as Manchester City are not expected to send their most senior figures. https://www.thetimes.com/sport/football/article/kelly-cates-match-of-the-day-sky-sports-slj73s0v9

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5926176/2024/11/16/thomas-tuchel-england-manager-harry-kane/ ‘Harry Kane expects Thomas Tuchel to be a “real injection of energy” when he takes over as England head coach next year. Tuchel, 51, will start work on January 1 and then manage England for the first time in March. England captain Kane, who played for Tuchel last season at Bayern Munich, described the German’s motivation style at length on Saturday, saying that he did not “shy away from confrontation”, and admitting that some players did not like how he spoke to them at Bayern.’ This bit is a bit worrying - we don’t want a Capello mark 2.
https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/31763289/harry-kane-tuchel-warning-england-players/ ‘Kane says Tuchel’s personality will bring a significant change to the calm approach of Gareth Southgate’s eight-year reign. The captain said: “We know Gareth had a great way of keeping everyone together but he and Thomas are different in the way they approach training and tactics. “Everyone has their own stamp and I’m talking about working with Thomas every day at Bayern — so it might be different when you’re seeing him every few months.’
I don’t think he will be a Capello but sometimes some hard truths need to be said and I don’t think under Southgate those talks were had. These are professional players and I think they can take it, when its needed. They shouldn’t be sugarcoated in self praise when it’s not deserved.
Some of the comments from several players during the Euros illustrated that. It felt like some of them were mystified as to why they were getting criticised. They clearly didn't realise just how bad they were playing.
I hope the FA have worked out why only half the Bayern dressing room liked him because we don’t want that to happen and then players start going into international retirement etc. Plus unlike the Southhate era the media will be less respectful and less forgiving of Tuchel.
Capello was only heavily critiqued after the fact. This is why all these narratives are just complete nonsense to me. It’s all about results. If Bellingham didn’t score that late goal then Southgate likely gets completely shredded by players indirectly. Even with getting to the final you could create a narrative if you desired that it wasn’t a particularly happy camp. It’s all subjective and largely based on uncorroborated gossip or biased opinions put out years later. Tuchel like Capello is going to be a short term hire (unless he actually wins something). So, he can’t have any long term negative impact on squad morale. When was the last person that retired themselves solely because of a coach anyway? I don’t recall anyone under Capello. Can only think of Ben White tbh.
