Apologies mate, my post was not directed at you. I agree that turning over the staff after poor performance is desperate and that conference play is the better indicator of a program's standing, 100%, however so far they seem to be doing well this year.
How do we know if the head coaches of these programs at issue changed their staffs? Did the assistants choose to leave for other opportunities or were they forced out? I do not know, but the AZ female assistant is married and her partner lived in another state. She was planning to leave for several months but stayed on through the summer to help with recruiting. She goes way back with the head coach to playing together at Duke. The male assistant left after getting a pro opportunity. So maybe it was just a coincidence that they both left in close proximity. People seem to be jumping to conclusions rather than knowing facts.
There are PLENTY of P4 assistants that had opportunities in the pros with the new league. If the head coach wants them to stay, specially with another assistant who had left, there is room to make it work. But hey, these days people believe in whatever narrative they chose too. Either way, Arizona has conference play to be in the hot seat or not. Specifically in a new conference.
You sound defensive. If the assistant wants to leave it is not the head coach's decision. In fact, the Spokane press release says: it’s long been his goal to coach in the professional ranks. I have no information either way, but it is possible he wanted a change after three years at AZ. He is not 'plenty of power 4 assistants'. He is an individual. This is not group think.
He was a terrible hire in the first place. He’s never had success at any of the schools he’s been at. In multiple staffs that were fired. It’s what the Michigan coach is finding out- if you have terrible assistants, you don’t win games. For a big time school and how connected she is, her staffs have been underwhelming to put it nicely.
Not counting the current interim coaches, who will be the first few casualties for the end of the 2024 season?
Assuming last contract year that are common knowledge in the P4’s and in a bad place overall: Oregon. After that probably mid majors.
Yes...At least one in the WCC - Coach has been told they were on a short leash for the year with minimum requirements and as now, I highly doubt they will make it going into conference play.
So I don't know a lot about this. I do know the original poster repped it so you probably have it right but. Pacific is having a bad year, but the last 3 have been some of the better years in the history of the program. At least the recent history. The last 3 years with the co-coaches in charge have the highest win percentages since 2011 and 2 out of the 3 years were higher than that. It's worth noting that in 2011 Pacific was still in the Big West. A tough conference but not the WCC. In a similar vein St. Mary's isn't killing it, but they are 1 game under .500 and have 2- 10 win seasons in their last 3 years. This is after a seemingly endless string of 7 win seasons before she got there. I guess this is it. I'm not saying the poster is wrong, but if it is true it seems to me an AD out there doesn't really understand the history of their soccer program and might have some unrealistic expectations.
i agree. I wonder if ADs in the West realize that (1) the West, on average, has the strongest teams in Division I (not to downplay a conference like the ACC, I am saying on average for the geographic region) and (2) the West has the greatest parity of any geographic region. The West is a killer's row for coaches, with far fewer opportunities for easy games than anywhere else.
Oh I think you have summed up the situation quite accurately and would argue that the answer to a question posed is 'No, the AD doesn't realize the situation'.
Can't imagine this is what the NC State coach had in mind. Let's see.....if they can win a game in the ACC.
Last year's Memphis team was almost two-thirds international--with at least 10 players from Canada, if not more, plus a 2/3 from Japan, 2/3from Germany. Crazy. This year's Memphis has 11 internationals---8 from Canada.
Perhaps for another thread but do you know how it's going for them with the International players? Memphis has an RPI around 290 right now. Marshall got a new coach and actually de-committed lots of US players to go the foreign player route so there's another experiment. They are RPI 186 right now.
Dang… my apologies to Memphis! Had the rpi list I was checking sorted backwards. (So they are about 290 from the bottom of D1!) There’s a thread about this somewhere but I wish all those on student Visas the very best! Hope you don’t hooked on fast food and Dunkin' donuts!
I think it's time to talk about Ange Kelly at Texas. I don't think she'll get fired but it needs to be considered. She needs to be on the hot seat. Good recruiter, horrible coach. They just lost to a BAD Florida team. you can't lose that game if you're Texas with all that experienced talent on the team. year after year they underachieve with so much talent. They have 6 or 7 blue chip players on this team. Amalia Villarreal is CARRYING this team on her back as a freshman. she has zero help. She's transferring at the end of the season.
Kelly should have been fired years ago. There was the report that she was so tight with a couple of admins that they would never fire her be said of personal relationships within the department so the dirt she has on them is more important than the athletes winning
Byars, who is an outstanding forward and Texas's best player, did not play tonight---I assume because of injury, not sure. Kelly could have been fired after her first five or so years with Texas, when the Horns were quite poor. The team was not good in her first few seasons there. It has been better in recent years, but I agree that on the whole, given their recruiting, she has underachieved. Florida is not a bad team this year. That program has been down for several years but it is inching its way back.
Completely disagree on Florida. They are a bad team, and quite honestly should be on the hot seat too. A program that preaches the right things on social media but talks to players in the parking lot of events prior to the permissible date, Last year win against LSU was the first in years in SEC play. Not sure they will surpass 1 win this year again in league play. Let alone make the conference tournament. We are talking about Florida here… Cupcake schedule and yet they tied 3 mid major schools. I would be willing to bet money that they will finish under .500
I don't want to go off-topic here, but do you remember the names of the Japanese players? I like to follow Japanese players overseas, but it's sometimes difficult to track the ones playing college soccer.
