I agree with it being soft but the 1v1 defending to allow him into the box in the first place wasn't good enough and he does pull his shirt back and the attacking player gets across the defender well enough. Credit Maryland for getting the ball into a good area and taking advantage of what was given to them.
If the Maryland player was to earn the PK, it would have been on the initial shirt pull, not on the dramatic fall from the one arm "push".
In my post starting this thread, I whined about the lack of preseason info and media coverage. I've got to say though, IDS' mens soccer coverage once the season started has been great. They've become my go to for match previews and updates... https://www.idsnews.com/article/2024/09/iu-mens-soccer-preview-ohio-state-todd-yeagley-justin-weiss
I was thinking of going to the Ohio State-Indiana game tonight, but rain plus 22 mph wind killed that idea.
It was good to see the boys fight back to tie twice. On the road. In a monsoon. It's just too bad we gifted them their first goal. I didn't get a great look at their second. Good goal or sloppy marking?
First goal: our left back passed the ball to OSU and bam, nice goal. On the second goal, Harms came off his line to grab a free kick service - and didn't get the ball. We still have (starting) players who aren't effective and I can't understand why they aren't riding the pine.
Phew! What a week. We tied #4 OSU and beat #8 Wisconsin on the road. I gotta be happy with that. Oduro showed up - and in a big way! A brace of goals shot from just outside the 18. Mihalic also scored a goal from the top of the box. I see a pattern here - rather than trying to cram the ball into the corner and then cross it to one of 9 opposing defenders, we took shots from the top of the box. And they went in. Indeed, that's how most of our opponents have scored (apart from a few spilled crosses by our GK) - from the top of the area. This strategy also releases our most dangerous scorers, Sarver (who made a terrific pass to Oduro for the first goal), Mihalic, and now Oduro, to shoot more. I hope we continue this trend. Unfortunately, our NIL transfer stud once again had no shots and no assists. However, he was offside a couple of times and and gave the ball away to the defense a handful of times. Wisconsin is a good team. If Wisconsin has a weakness, I'd say it's their keeper. He didn't impress in this game. Now, back home for three games.
Have to agree with taking the away draw and away win, but we gave up 4 leads this week, if my memory is correct. That's... not ideal... as we progress toward the tournaments. Any idea what kind of deal he got?
No. Those things aren't common knowledge. But I may ask around... And I agree about the leads. The first tying goal by UW was a result of sustained pressure by their offense (which is very good). The second resulted from a Harms spill. If he can clean those up, we'll be in pretty good shape. We got lucky in that they beat us a handful of times down our left side, but without a result. In one case, one of the center backs cleaned it up, booting it out. In another, the UW forward simply had a bad final touch and chased it over the goal line. Had they done better with those, the score would've been different.
I was at the game and your analysis is spot on. We - Wisconsin missed a few goals in the 1st half that normally are not missed. But Indiana played a good game with timely shots & goals and walked away with a nice road win. Indiana should do well in the standings & in the BiG10 tournament. But I have to say with Indiana’s soccer tradition I thought the fans (parents) would be more knowledgeable. I sat in a group with mixed fans and the moms & dads complaining about normal physical play was surprising. I felt I was with a bunch of 1st time parents at a house league game. Complaining about simple physical play that was not called a foul ( for either side). I have been to many other games and this group was by far the cringiest. I’m sure not all the Indiana fans are that clueless but these people were worth the price of admission. Complaining “that should be a yellow card” when even a foul was not called.
IU usually plays pretty, clean soccer, and a lot of times the opponent's MO is to make a game physical in hopes of ruining that, which is frustrating. One's definition of simple physical play could be seen as persistent obstruction of the beautiful game by another. So it may not be ignorance as much as different perspective.
I thought it was overall a very clean game. Both teams played an attractive style of soccer. I was also impressed that Wisconsin only started 3 internationals, the fewest IU has come up against this season.
Sorry, but soccer parents are pretty clueless all over the country. I can't understand, little johnny has been playing for over a decade and in that time you haven't figured out the rules (laws) and what is a foul. It's why when I was a coach I trained my parents to shut up, cheer and pick-up your kid on time from practice.
Every team fouls - it was 11 to 12 ♂️ From NCAA.com (men’s soccer) official stats Indiana : Shots on Goal: 4 Shots: 5 Saves: 6 Corners: 3 Fouls: 11 Offsides: 2 WISCONSIN: Shots on Goal: 8 Shots: 14 Saves: 1 Corners: 12 Fouls: 12 Offsides: 3
Prophetic words, those! Once again, we gave up two leads. Elliot had himself a game offensively but, as a right outside defender, he was also beaten by his man UW's second goal. We had some other major screwups defensively and UW capitalized on two of them.
At least we aren't blowing 2 goal leads! Great fight back from the boys in the second half. Hopefully this can inspire some confidence going forward.
Hey, hey... I was at the game last night as a current KY resident and UK soccer fan... although I grew up in IN and am a lifelong IU fan. What a disappointing match from my perspective as a UK fan but such an exhilarating 2nd half for you all as IU fans! You all had us on our heals the entire match. The 2 goals we scored were lucky from the standpoint of the actual shots we had on goal (those may have been the only 2). I certainly wasn't comfortable with the 2-0 lead at halftime but what a comeback from your boys. While I was disappointed in our result, congrats on a great comeback W.
Looks like we have a way to stop p!ssing away our leads - come from behind and lead for 5 minutes or less. We looked pretty horrible in the first half. UK's first goal was scored by Logan Dorsey, brother of former IU player Griff Dorsey on a counter. We are very susceptible to counters. UK's second goal came from a scrum off a corner. I imagine some harsh things were said at halftime and they seemed to work. Mihalic's first goal of the night came on a pass from Oduro, hit the post and (for once!) went in. The second goal started with a pass from Miller to Sarver, who crossed the ball to Mihalic at the six for his brace. Oduro got another assist when he put freshman forward Nesci in on goal. That goal was deflected and, for what seems to be the first of the season, it went in rather than bouncing wide. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, but first you have to shoot. Hoping for a less stressful result when we host PSU tomorrow.
Well, the first half wasn't less stressful. In fact, Murador scored in the 37th minute, but the play was called offside. I was standing right where the supposed offside occurred and - it wasn't. Anyway, we didn't score until the 68th minute when Heuer (another freshman) scored in a scrum in front of the goal. This time they determined he wasn't offside. Heuer got his brace in the 76th minute on a nice move in the box, going far bar. Maybe Heuer and/or Nesci should be starting.
Again, the vagaries of the RPI. Michigan is not a good side. Their passing is mediocre to bad. Most of their shots were poor. Their defense is porous and their GK is not very good. In fact, the GK's gaffe resulted in Weiss' first goal of the season. Weiss' second goal was very nice, but the UM defenders let him move unmarked to his right for his shot. Same thing with Elliot - he just walked into the area and shot. Doody was making comparisons with Gutman's run against MD, but it wasn't nearly that good. We (Minzey) were even able to head a ball in on a corner. It may be the first headed goal on a corner this season. UM was able to foul 17 times, though - the only stat that they led in. We pulled almost all of our starting midfielders and forwards in the second half. In fact, Sarver only played 35 minutes after providing two assists.
