I remember this day. That Brazilian team made me cringe as much as the current one. Look at that stacked Argentina side. That was insane, lol.
Coaching does matter I guess cuz Argentina has had is most successful stretch with a significantly less talented team
A win against Argentina is a win against Argentina ... specially in a final, but we also committed like 38 fouls in that match. Not something to be that proud of.
That's a result Brazilians can be proud of. Now we wait for the Messi apologists to show up. If only Brazil could have advanced so Vini could bury the demon once and for all.
In addition to the ridiculously easy path to the final Argentina had the lowest traveling among the main 3 contenders Also were given an extra day of rest for the semifinal And will enjoy an extra day of rest for the final
CONMEBOL needs money desperately and has been ensuring Messi stays in the tournament until the final for a while now.
I personally don’t think the reffing is outrageous and anything outside of the ordinary for a bigger team. But the setup definitely is there for them To have every logistical advantage to make the final
As I mentioned earlier in the thread, if an Argentine player were to pull out a knife and stab someone, there would likely be a robust discussion about whether knives are mentioned in the rules. I believe two factors are at play here. First, these tournaments have seen many teams use persistent fouling to prevent opponents from doing anything meaningful. Second, with Messi aging, no referee wants to be seen as responsible for him not winning, so Argentine players tend to avoid getting carded. Thus, while Argentina's approach isn't unique, they have an advantage with this tactic that other teams do not.
Big teams in every sport always get a favorable whistle. I didn’t see the issue last wc for example and other than a more lenient whistle, haven’t really seen it here tbh but logistically it is obvious that the final needed to be Argentina vs brazil Colombia Uruguay Or even the hosts USA So they made every effort possible to make sure that Argentina gets there and let the rest take care of itself as it actually did
If Vinicius had done it it would have been the only memorable thing he's done so far in a Brazil shirt. You need to win the games. Argentina could have very well been on their way home (apparently that's a short flight or so), if their opponent would havebeen better at coverting penalties.
I can tell that a lot of people have never watched this competition because of the crying about fouls. Back in my football degenerate phase i would watch Libertadores and the funniest thing was seeing people take charge and run towards the ledge to spit at the bench of the opponent and the players coming on. This isn't your typical shake hands and make up competition.
Yeah I don’t complain about the reffing nor did I think they got helped last WC the logistics here are obvious but that’s ok. They’ll still have to beat a top team to win it.
As i said time and time again. I think multiple teams beat them, refereeing or not. I'm not impressed.
The impact at the World Cup is the same as at the Copa: Argentina is practically penciled into the final, making it theirs to lose. For everyone else, it’s theirs to win. Edit: @J-Mezzy I'm really struggling to reconcile how Argentina is helped in the Copa but not in the World Cup. In the words of Obama, "Come on, man!" LOL
Logistics is the only help I complain about and it’s much easier in a COPA With less teams and less logistics to facilitate this than on a World Cup with so many moving parts and surprises. They faced Netherlands, Croatia, and France Also, CONMEBOL is not FIFA and vice versa. CONMEBOL needs Argentina in the final. World Cup does well nobody who makes the final
Again, please read my post. Referees don't want to be the ones responsible for Messi not winning, which was a factor in the World Cup and is a factor here too. The logistics you're talking about are something I never addressed. I'm not saying they aren't another factor—they very well might be—but I don't see how you can watch the World Cup and not think any other team would get away with playing like that. Big teams have an advantage for similar reasons that generational players like Messi receive favoritism. I don't see how you can acknowledge team favoritism and deny player favoritism.
Why did they give their opponents the opportunity to beat him via penalty then? Makes absolutely zero sense. People will tell you Argentina is pushed by the referees yet they manage to progress in penalty kick shootouts which is 50% skill, 50% luck. You can't tell me refs intentionally push it to penalties it's absurd.
Argentina has played this way long before Messi and will do so long after Messi. I’ve been watching CONMEBOL since 1990 so what drives you guys crazy it’s another day for me. They’ve been kicking people since I was a child and so does Uruguay. Argentina have always gotten away with it more than most as being one of the big boys in CONMEBOL. Brazil don’t typically play this way but they surely kicked the living shit out James in 2014 and they were allowed to for similar reasons. I know organizations try to help the big teams as they need them to make big runs to secure ratings. So logistically, they try to facilitate it in any way they can. But you can tune in once Messi retires, Argentina will kick people. Atlético will kick people. Uruguay will kick people. It’s almost part of those teams’ identity. And more often than not, they’ll get away with it
didn't say they bought the ref, I said refs throughout the tournament were reluctant to send Argentine players off, you guys keep changing what I said
The team that has the greatest number of expulsed players is Brazil, with 11 – in 9 different matches, a record shared with Argentina. The team whose opponents have received the most red cards is Germany (incl. West Germany), with 20 – in 18 different matches, also a record.
