Lol... The context is... we didn't really want to do it so we didn't make it happen? Yeah, I get the context.
It would be exactly like the USSF "leadership" to double down on blowing up WC 26 just after seeing the spectacular blow up of Copa America 24. If they have no idea what that sort of pyrotechnics would do to the finances of the USSF, then they deserve all the burn that would ensue.
I think if we lose on Monday and Berhalter isn’t immediately fired you shouldn’t take that as a sign that it’s not going to happen. I think as McBride said you’re always talking to agents all the time and gauging what’s out there. And someone like Crocker with his experience, has a large rolodex upon which to call upon.
Dude, I ain’t kicking the cat or beating the dog, heck my wife wouldn’t even know that I’m bothered at all about this as I sit next to her and rub her feet; at the same time, it just seems odd to me that there are a select few on here, and maybe you are one of them, who are simply okay with mediocrity and underperforming results.
Well your posting does not paint the picture of someone that is unbothered. And the false dichotomies don't make your points any better, because no one has to be "okay with mediocrity" to strongly disagree with your wild, sweepingly negative takes on an admittedly bad loss.
Passion is part of sports. For me, that’s more so with National team events versus professional sports. If you look at some of our posting histories, we are consistently pretty rational, calm and fair-minded. But we have limits. And I think some of us have reached a point of no return with Gregg. If it comes off as irrational, so be it.
One man’s passion will no doubt manifest as nonsense to others. That’s fine. And it probably makes sense the world works that way. Maybe a better word is conviction.
It's not. Saying a tough loss is this team's "ceiling" due to the manager despite a star player punching an opponent and being sent off, claiming people are okay with mediocrity because we aren't throwing a fit and saying sack the manager now, repeatedly calling out people for "personal attacks" but then turning around almost immediately and calling someone "Mrs. Berhalter" and asking "how much are they paying you"... This is not merely conviction. I think "nonsense" is a really nice and pretty charitable way of categorizing it, actually!
Well, the “Mrs. Berhalter” comment is actually kind of funny. I didn’t see that in the thread, but I’ll go back to find it for a chuckle. And look, we all have our moments. I think several traditionally calm and fair-minded posters were majorly triggered. Calm will prevail for most (not all) of us.
Bora has managed 4 different (at best 2nd tier) national teams to the second round of the world cup, (in 5 attempts) picking up victories over Scotland, Switzerland, Spain, Bulgaria (twice), Colombia, Belgium, and Iraq. (only 1 minnow in that list)---- 8 WC wins, 80% advancement out of group rate. WC victories of all of our other coaches combined with, at best a 2nd tier team (US), in 7 attempts: Portugal, Mexico, Algeria, Ghana, Iran ---- 5 WC wins, 57% advancement out of group rate. Bora sets the standard for a NT coach for doing more with less. That is not what we need now, we need somebody who can do well with more. But Bora deserves respect.
Is it persistent, though? I can think of 3 reds given to us by Ivan Barton, and the Dest one, and maybe 2 second yellows.
I am of the opinion that a loss vs Uruguay should result in the dismissal of Greg Berhalter, but a win or draw and he continues the journey regardless of whether we advance or not.
Hervé Renard, who was mentioned earlier, is the type of coach the US should hire. He is someone who has done very well at knockout tournaments, both CAF but also with Saudi, was paid less than GB (https://financefootball.com/2022/07/04/best-paid-head-coaches-in-2022-fifa-world-cup/) and speaks English. But I'm not sure GB is actually getting sacked.
Personally, I hope Uruguay don’t sit their starters. Feet to the fire. Either Berhalter proves he deserves the job or he doesn’t. Frankly, I’m kind of tired of this skating by doing just enough.
My prediction is Uruguay does rest a couple of stars, the US comes out determined and motivated..........................and wins the game 2-0. Doesn't advance in Copa America but does save Berhalter's job. We've been here before with Berhalter. The whole board says: "if the USMNT performs badly in this game, then he's gone." And then the result comes to save the day.
He's not going anywhere. The USSF is known for its parsimony. We never change horses mid-race, unless qualification were at risk and it's not.
But we have changed horses mid-race. Both Bradley and Klinsmann were dismissed. And while WCQing isn't at risk, we better believe it's even more important NOW with a home World Cup on the horizon. If there's a feeling that a change is needed, now would be the time. But as I've said, I expect the USMNT to now play well against Uruguay. This will be a moot point.
I can't say I have any particular insight into how the powers that be will make such decisions, but I don't see how he continues if the US doesn't make the quarters.
32 teams make it out of group stage,so that's not a problem. But we won't have Mexico in the first knockout round.
Renard has also never gotten out of the group at a World Cup in two tries. And he didn’t have great teams either time but isn’t the idea that we need a coach who can do more with less?
