I was impressed by Hjulmand in the Danish midfield----and not just because of his screamer----thought his overall play was good. Not advocating we go get him---just thought he played well.

Wharton just appeared. I think Rice, Wharton, Bellingham is way more competitive than anything Southgate has tried yet.

England just seem to enjoy never making tough choices about good/great players. If they just drop Foden I think selection is actually really straight forward. Which sucks for Foden but winning is winning.

I do think certain segments of England would rather lose with Foden being the central figure than win by platforming Bellingham and Saka with great supporting talents. Like Wharton, Gordon and Watkins.

No Lewandowski again for Poland, who are playing for their tournament lives.

Refs have been good so far in this tournament, Anthony Taylor in this match will test that

I think the ref in the Spain-Italy match was poor. Completely fell for all the feigned injuries and embellished contact.

Saliba had a good half. Playing LCB with Upamecano to his right. Thinking maybe it’s Williams’s position to lose now.

If the Simons goal would have been called as such on the field - and not been called offside - I think it would have stood which would have added a little spice to the finish

Also, it was kind of ridiculous that they didn’t let Anthony Taylor go to the pitchside screen and make the final decision on that subjective offside interference call. I don’t much like Mark Clattenburg but on this one I agreed with him 100%.

Edit: and it probably would’ve sped up the whole drawn out process, because VAR Stuart Atwell seemed to be dillydallying with his review/advice.

I think at one point, I thought of Southgate as a “vibes” manager who had, at the very least, coalesced the dressing room and built a culture.

But first and foremost, the Ben White saga torpedoed that image. And subsequently, this and the Kalvin Phillips comments have highlighted how much of a fcuking loser this clown is. The one thing you don’t do as a NT manager throw your own players under the bus. The one thing! And this self-preservation artist conman can’t even manage that

it’s weird he didn’t take a left sided winger he could play

If they aren’t fit enough to press then play a counter attacking side? U have 2 or 3 pressing then space behind it’s just illogical

set up in a mid block or go back to 3 at the back

they aren’t really set up for countering though.

Kane is flexible but older and only Saka is really suited to that in the front 3. like he should have taken Sterling or Grealish if he wanted to do that?

Well kane clearly isn’t fit and has an ongoing back issue

start Watkins potentially and look at trying to counter or change something

you can’t play as a side that wants to dominate possession then sit off it doesn’t make sense

it’s almost like wenger post 2012 tactics. Really strange. If the players are all tired then rotate people, play a less intense system with players in the right position?

foden and trippier is pure stupidity, casual fans can see that does not work and the imaginary line he won’t let rice cross or trent is bizarre. Play a 433 and start Wharton, because we all saw rice was not a deep lying midfielder this season and was much more effective getting forward and running between the lines

    Isn't that Gordon?

To be honest I am amazed he hasn't put Saka on the LW and moved Foden to the RW yet.

I thought Taylor did ultimately make the call (correctly, IMO) but perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you're saying. The AR flagged after the goal to let Taylor know Dumfries was definitely in an offside position and then Taylor decided he was close enough to be interfering with play. Are you saying he should've been told to go to the monitor to verify his decision?

Rabiot should've smashed that ball and then he played it behind Griezmann. Yeah, the latter probably still should've done better, but Rabiot should've shot.
