As for the overseas-based contingent, Coach Michael Weiss has confirmed the availability of Fulham goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, Hoffenheim midfielder Stephan Schröck, Xerez CD (on loan from Córdoba CF) striker Javier Patiño, Paul Mulders, Dennis Cagara, Jerry Lucena, Juani Guirado and Ray Jónsson. The local-based squad given above will then be cut off to give way for the overseas players to be included in the final squad to be released in a few weeks' time.

hmm it seems that way. but if the philippines has all their naturalized players they would win the afc challenge cup. i even made a tournament on fifa 13 putting philippines through. go to creation centre and check it out. my gamer tag is tnt818

Don't be so sure, Darklink. Their biggest road-block will still be the Philippines during the qualifiers. As I said earlier, a number of their best players from abroad are coming over, including Schröck from Hoffenheim, who has been influential whenever he's available to play for them.

However, I'm not really optimistic with their chances, with only a few days for them to train together, plus the head coach just signed an extension, which had mixed reactions from the public, mostly negative. Looking at the squad, there are only a few true defenders, which leaves a question mark on who can outright stop Gayanbamerdi Chonkayev from scoring.

As we in the Philippines thread have said, edlee1992, all our players are Filipino citizens, not naturalised. The country recognises dual-citizenship, and the team currently has an unwritten policy not to include naturalised players that don't have blood ties to the country. Just saying to remind you of that.

But as I've said, I'm otherwise pessimistic about the team's chances of getting the title given their current issues.

The Philippine's preparations for this tournament has not been ideal, with the European based players not being available and the local UFL league, not releasing most of their players for extended training camp this year, but the good news is that because the tournament qualifiers will be held on FIFA match dates, most of the European based players will be available as is reported in this article:

    http://sports.inquirer.net/88289/azkals-eye-full-strength-squad-for-afc-tourney

"Azkals coach Michael Weiss told the Inquirer that he has gotten confirmation from several Europe-based standouts of their availability for the tournament which falls on Fifa international dates.
Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge, midfielders Stephan Schrock and Jerry Lucena and defenders Juani Guirado, Rob Gier, Dennis Cagara and Ray Jonsson are all expected to see action[IMG] in the tournament"

I think if they play a compact defensive game, the Philippines can overcome their lack of practice time together, and be competitive even with the likes of Turkmenistan. It will depend upon whether our inexperienced national team coach Weiss, will listen to his European based players and use the right plan for the game against Turkmenistan. On the other hand they need to be better offensively against the other teams in the group in order to improve their chances of making it to at least 2nd place. It doesn't really matter if we finished first or second as long as we make the Finals next year.

I also have to say that they will also have to depend on the results of the other groups that have already finished before the group in Manila will start their fixtures. They should keep watch of Myanmar, Laos and, maybe, India or Afghanistan that might only go for second in their groups but I will expect them to be high on their offensive game. Goal difference will play a role of which of the 2nd placers will advance. If you ask me, if any of the runners-up in the other groups would have a GD of more than +5, I'll be doubtful for the Philippines' chances.

Indeed stellarboy. We still have a chance. Since we will know by the time our qualifiers start the result of the other groups respective tournament qualifiers, it will be up to the team to makeup the goal difference. It is an advantage they should not squander.

interesting that all three Turkmenistan's friendly matches are similar to each other. 1-1 draw, 1 turkmen player red card, and a goal after 80 min.
