When I saw that article, I had to pause for a moment to remember who he was. Then again, women's college soccer isn't high on my radar, but it did come back. "Oh yeah, I remember that name." It's not normal for coaches to retire four days before the season, especially for long-time coaches like he was. If the game passed him by, it would have made more sense for him to have an announcement of "this will be my last season" so he can go out with awards and recognition, like what Gene Smith did...right? Here's more: “As many of you know I modeled our program after Dean Smith’s basketball program, and retiring at this time is a credit to his thinking, as well,” Dorrance said in a statement. “He would re-evaluate his tenure, not after the season, but after he had time to re-charge his batteries prior to the next season. When he didn’t, he retired. After last season I initially was excited about the chance to bolster our roster, which we most certainly have done, but as preseason training camp went on, I realized I didn’t have the same energy it takes to give 100% to this year’s team. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5694620/2024/08/11/unc-womens-coach-anson-dorrance-retires/ I guess it's just a different way of thinking. I'm not sure I necessarily agree, but whatever. He's definitely worthy of an enjoyable retirement.
She became a hairstylist, married in 2001, and is apparently still bitter. https://www.chicagotribune.com/2003/06/15/outcast-with-a-cause/ "There's no way they'd cut me." Well...she was wrong.

That is harsh. He was facing away and was off the pitch during a stoppage. Yellow maybe -- for a Red card, it should have been on someone's leg as he was asserting dominance.
I've been posting this in various places forever, but I'm doing it again here and asking the same question: Which of these offenses is the player guilty of? A player is sent off and shown the red card if he commits any of the following seven offenses: Is guilty of serious foul play (SFP) Is guilty of violent conduct (VC) Spits at an opponent or any other person (S) Denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball (this does not apply to the goalkeeper within his own penalty area) (DGH) Denies an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent moving towards the player's goal by an offense punishable by a free kick or a penalty kick (DGF) Uses offensive, insulting or abusive language (AL) Receives a second caution in the same match (2CT) The LotG does not say " whatever the referee feels like" or even "taking a leak"
There's a new women's soccer team coming. It's definitely good news for soccer, for women, for women's sports and all that. No complaints there. The rest of it? Absolutely laughable. 1846193497855938956 is not a valid tweet id
Related, sort of. Sidenote: At one point in time, Joe Milano was one of the "group of local investors" who owned our favorite soccer team. Pregame meals were done via his Villa Milano place. He then went on to own the Columbus Stars minor league soccer team, which played one season and the Columbus Stars minor league hockey team which played a half-season before folding.
Whatever happened to that guy from Las Vegas who was going to buy the Crew and move them there but then announced that he was buying the Crew and leaving it in Columbus and then moved here along with his whole family, bought a house, put his kids in local schools and then disappeared? Am I the only one who remembers that?
I regret not getting to a Stars hockey game before they folded. Would've been cool to see hockey at the Fairgrounds.
When was that? What was his name? I don't remember it, was he before Precourt? Were you here when the Chill played there?
It was pre-fratboy. Surely someone else will remember I saw the Chill play a couple of.times at the fairgrounds. Terrible venue but a whale of a lot of.fun.
I've always lived in Cleveland, but started being able (transportation-wise and financially) to get down to Columbus regularly for games during the Jackets' Inaugural Season. (My first Crew game in person was the 2001 blowout of the Mutiny when Valderrama got tossed in the 12th minute.)
Some people saw indoor football at the fairgrounds. I never did, but from what I heard, people had to cross the field to get to the other side of the arena. IMO, that doesn't make sense, but I remember hearing such. Can concur. The arena was an absolute dump back then. The team got kicked out during playoff season because of other commitments. The beers had to have been something like $5 at the most back then. The fans were incredibly rowdy and, since that was back in the days of hockey goons, every fight saw fans standing and chanting "FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!" Read the book "Chill Factor" if you haven't. It was a terrible venue, but a hell of a time.
I thought that was a one off. MISL. Pittsburgh vs Cleveland, perhaps?? The AISL was down at the Ohio Center,
Is the Ohio Center (Battelle Hall) still used for anything outside some random exhibitions? Does the Arnold use it for anything? I walked through that area a few years ago and it seemed like one hell of a ghost town, although I'd imagine it livens up during exhibitions. In the modern era, that whole building just seems odd. Not the main convention center, mind you, but the older Ohio Center. I do remember the Max & Erma's, the TicketMaster outlet and the arcade that were all in the lower level down there. Circa 2005, that area had bad FM radio reception, although I didn't expect much with a $10 pocket radio.
Don Garber would understand if the CWC were canceled. Fixture congestion and all that. (How much "fixture congestion" is called "Apple is paying us a ton and we'll be damned if we give up Leagues Cup.") https://www.reuters.com/sports/socc...ds-call-cancel-new-club-world-cup-2024-10-16/
They "played" at Battelle Hall, and by that, I mean "somehow stumbled to a 5-35 record" while their owner couldn't figure out why the Crew was so popular and the only people at indoor soccer were waiting for a bus.
