Should Gregg Berhalter be fired if the usmnt get grouped at Copa America? Yes, 100%. Do I think the federation that hired a search firm to rehire the same manager they already had will actually make that decision if the time comes? Absolutely not.— Rob Usry (@RobUsry) June 29, 2024
There were people saying the US should hire Herve Renard after the World Cup... I remember because I was one of them! Another name that was brought up was Wilfried Nancy. I remember because I was one of them! As far as "speaks English" another name that was mentioned repeatedly was Bielsa who they didn't hire because he doesn't speak English and is now on the brink of eliminating the US in the group stage... how is that even possible when he doesn't speak English as well as the Eggg?? US Soccer about to have Eggg on their face!
From Pioli's wiki page: An elegant, tenacious, physical, and mobile defender, Pioli was capable of playing anywhere along the back-line, although he performed best as a man-marking centre-back, or "stopper," in Italian. Considered to be a promising and consistent player in his youth, his career was affected by numerous serious injuries
So, when the US ends with two losses out of three and a -4 GD and Berhalter isn’t fired but gets “strong support from USSF” who are you going to be rooting for in 2026?
Notable for the Cherundolo case MLS leaders in expected goal difference:1. LAFC, +17.052. New York Red Bulls, +8.83. Real Salt Lake, +8.24. Colorado Rapids, +8.15. FC Cincinnati, +7.4— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) June 29, 2024
The question is this. They hired a search firm to find a sporting director and clearly did a worldwide search and hired someone none of us expected and with no ties whatsoever to US Soccer. And Crocker comes in as someone with lots of other career options and with the USMNT coaching job as one of his most important decisions. Do you think they suddenly abandoned the idea of doing a broad search at that point, or that Crocker would have taken the job if he had no real say in the coaching hire? Or do you think it’s more likely that we didn’t have a lot of good candidates available given the salary we are willing to pay? And we also have credible reports they were ready to hire Marsch till the players intervened.
I have an idea that I gleaned from USA politics: "Let's try it for the next four years with no head coach."
Counting on help from one of the poorest teams in the tournament? Sounds like a "Berhalter" plan. We dug this hole and only the USA itself should be responsible for extricating USA soccer from the pit. We do need some help but scoring 4 or 5 would go a LONG way toward making the help needed minimal.
We were toying around with Bielsa awhile ago. In 2023 Mexico went down the road with him and he was asking them for $10m/year. He took less from Uruguay because they are closer to his home country (and probably because they have a much better team that won’t embarrass him).
Lots of AC Milan fans don’t like him. They think he does a very poor job of fitting profiles together and picking lineups.
Unfortunately, I think you're correct. Unless Uruguay just wipes the pitch with the USMNT and the team looks discombobulated, I think you're right.
Is there any possibility that some of our lads might be bribable enough to tank the last match and assure Gregg's demise? As much as i want Gregg gone, and have since he was first hired, I do not think our players get that petty. But you never know.
FWIW. Confirmation that if the US happen to lose to Uruguay and fail to qualify for the knockout stage of Copa America Gregg Berhalter will continue to be the coach “Zero chance”of the Federation making a change at this time People need to just accept the fact that he’s our coach— Eric Wynalda (@EricWynalda) June 29, 2024
You're going to need a cite on that. Mexican fans seem pretty certain that he asked for $10M from the FMF, and that's a lot closer culturally to Argentina than the US. And also a decent amount of time physically closer. I'd imagine speaking English is not very important when you are coaching Uruguayan players.
Wouldn't they say this either way? You wouldn't throw more pressure on the team by saying the coach's job is on the line.
Also, it's Wynalda. So, the fwiw that the poster had should take that into account. The only reason I could think that anyone could be certain is financial. Which is possible.
Because they understand the impact of Weah's red card. Nevertheless, we should be able to at least get a draw against an unmotivated Uruguayan B team
I'm just putting it out there as Wynalda has connections but it's also.....Wynalda. Who knows what will happen if we lose. I wouldn't completely discount the Fed wanting to keep G either way and G resigning. That's a scenario I don't see being acknowledged.
I know it's off topic but hiring William Wilson was one of the dumbest things. Coming over from Wasserman he didn't help at all, and the. JT Batson didn't really help much in the TV negotiations. On the pay scale thing, I know I've seen it on here but I was never able to find that they must pay men's and women's coaches the same. Happen to have that in a link anywhere? Everything I could find always came from Charlie Davies and this says he was wrong https://girlssoccernetwork.com/us-soccer-equal-pay-agreement-uswmnt-usmnt/ All I could find was that it split the WC bonuses (which is crazy) and that the women will be paid for the Olympics while the men won't and the men have Nations League and Gold Cup while women have the SheBelieves that remains separate. I think USSF lost like 30 million in revenue last year but it's supposed to be a surplus with the Copa and increased TV rights. So they should have enough money to pay a coach.
I wish i felt there was a chance of this but I do not think Gregg has the class to resign no matter how badly his teams play. That is another problem we have as a soccer nation; we do not take responsibility for our screwups. We always look to affix the blame anywhere but on us. Gregg resigning just won't happen because that would require him to admit he did wrong and that is very unlikely to happen. I think we have successfully created a true "classless" entity with USA soccer society.
Well then good thing Eggg speaks English with USMNT players and we won't be humiliated by failing to get out of the group stage in a tournament being hosted in the US where all three teams are lower in the FIFA rankings than the US and two of the three are Bolivia and Panama!
I'm going to choose to believe that Eric Wynalda has no idea what he's talking about as usual, because the alternative is too embarrassing to contemplate...
