I think this is pretty close to how I have it.

Like I said, Musiala is a bit like Zidane at times, albeit against weak opponents.

Gakpo has a very strong Sofascore rating indeed.

Many positions are a bit of a coin flip. Casteels has done well (as said above) but perhaps not of the Golden Glove class no (though 1986 is debatable I'd say).

    Thank you for this information!

I'm really curious how these numbers are calculated. Is the theory documented anywhere ?

Some of the differences between ratings are so miniscule

After each match I collect seven or nine sources - mainly Italian and French - and calculate an average of the marks received. To be included, a player has to be rated in more than half of the sources, which means that a sub entering in the 81th minute can be rated if he has an impact on the game while a player entering in the 70th minute could be without rating if the las 20 minutes of the game are purely "academical" (both teams just passing the ball around waiting for the final whistle).

From the quarterfinals I will include at least ten sources and I'll include the German ones (Kicker) after they are published.

By the way, if you're interested in some game or team averages of past Euros, there's a good chance I have the ratings. Just ask, and I'll try to find them!

Hmmm, maybe I should think deeper, but I am thinking about the level of the performance generally. Although it was against weaker opponents. Against Switzerland SofaScore has him almost a point lower, and that backs up what I saw (7.9. 8.0, 7.0). I am also excluding, which I said above too, the evergreen Zidane performances like Portugal at euro 2000 (Spain 2000?).

In style of play and attributes there are maybe better comparisons, and Zidane at Real Madrid (close or after age of 30) was different as the Juventus Zidane, but here I am thinking about the vertical dribbling across the middle of the pitch (more similar than, say, Hazard that I 'defended' in another thread - not by definition less dangerous if the ball eventually reaches the danger zones with more space around the ball; and Hazard had like Robben a high success rate compared to other volume dribblers).

In the way the ball is released or laid-off just before he reaches an opponent (who sets himself for a dribble attempt past him) or just after a successful dribble, makes me think of Zidane when I quickly think or feel about this.

Algorithmic websites do detect Musiala as an attacking midfielder or a left-sided 'winger' ('attacking midfielder left') as his main positions, which is comparable to Zidane in a different time. Musiala his body is different - there are always thing that are not similar and maybe there is a better comparison with an elite level player of the past.

The logical conclusion has to be opponent strength is not really factored in. When Germany played Scotland and Hungary for instance.

The most well balanced group was likely the one with France (maybe the one with Italy and Spain but Croatia is a bit too old, on the way down, and it had also Albania in).

But that group with France has now only Maignan (the goalkeeper), Kante and Sabitzer as standouts here. Those teams made each other look bad? Also don't get why Gakpo doesn't get rated here or in other publications: he seems to be someone who played well in all three games (from what I saw myself and what the algorithms say and show).

If we just go by the best players in the competition on display, then France would have more outfield players in the top than just only the Duracell runner playing in the sandbox league.

edit: there are also the substitutions of course, impacting the grades.

Very sour for the Danes :( Goal ruled out for offside (I thought it is not offside when it bounces off an opponent?) and then a little later a penalty for handball... maybe the right decision on both counts but very sour.

On many other occasions in this tournament the VAR does nothing because the standard has to be a "clear and obvious error". Was that penalty call clear and obvious?

I think I'd go with a 6 for entertainment ratings for both, avoiding going any lower for either (considering also that that's the lowest I went previously) as the goals alone (the first for the overall move and the second for the quality of the clip into the far corner) are enough to avoid it for Switzerland vs Italy even if I had wondered if I'd be ending up going somewhat lower at some point, and the main reason to consider it for Germany vs Denmark would be to reflect a negative entertainment-contribution of the penalty decision I guess (although it was not really an exciting game overall I felt anyway, albeit with some moments of nice and/or surprising skills). 'Correct' or not according to current rules I feel like that was very much ball to hand rather than vice versa anyway. Not to say Switzerland didn't put in an accomplished performance (both solid and cohesive, and winning fairly comfortably), although I probably still feel like they are a relatively ordinary team rather than a particularly exceptional one.

Maybe 8 for Donnarumma in Italian press surprises me slightly overall, even if when he made that early save I did start to wonder if he was on his way to entering my tournament XI. I think for the opening goal it might be argued he might have done better. On the other hand maybe Neuer getting 8 with TNT is slightly surprising too, but I also can see the positive reasons towards such a grade I guess and although surely clearly past his peak I'm tending to think in things like decision making and reliability he might have been optimising performances in this tournament moreso than even sometimes when more in his peak (and certainly in this Denmark game). Not that I think I am an any kind of expert on goalie performance lol: but those things did come to mind anyway, so maybe worth mentioning....

    Italy's final ratings:

7,02 Gianluigi Donnarumma (4 rated app.)
    6,30 Riccardo Calafiori (3)
    6,27 Mattia Zaccagni (3)
    5,80 Nicolò Barella (4), Lorenzo Pellegrini (3)
    5,78 Alessandro Bastoni (4)
    5,65 Andrea Cambiaso (2)
    5,57 Jorginho (3)
    5,47 Mateo Retegui (3)
    5,45 Federico Chiesa (4)
    5,43 Bryan Cristante (3)
    5,37 Davide Frattesi (3)
    5,30 Federico Dimarco (3)
    5,28 Gianluca Scamacca (4)
    5,08 Luciano Spalletti (coach)
    5,05 Matteo Darmian (2)
    4,85 Giovanni Di Lorenzo (4)

The team average is 5,61, but if we exclude Donnarumma's marks the average is actually lower than Scotland's and Serbia's (5,50).

The reasons why Italy's football has impoverished this much are many, but right now most people seem to blame the "guardiolismo".

Three years ago, when Italy won the title, Federico Chiesa rated 6,94, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Jorginho 6,66, Nicolò Barella 6,13, Giovanni Di Lorenzo 6,07 and Bryan Cristante 6,03.
