With the 2023-24 UCL preliminaries kicking off and category changes announced, it's time to open a new thread and close the old one. This should take us through EURO qualifying, all UEFA club cup and national team competitions, and any domestic matches in Europe from leagues or countries that don't get their own threads. EURO 2024 itself will get a separate forum once we get there. Categories for the first half of 2023-24 are here: https://www.docdroid.net/uZO87Mq/men-all-categories-1st-half-of-2023-24-pdf Peljto, Hernandez Hernandez, and Nyberg are the new Elite referees. Hategan has maintained his position in the Elite category, which is something I hadn't previously noted/considered. Same goes for Karasev.
What an honor to have the first real post of this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/com..._app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1 Mateu Lahoz will be commenting on UCL matches for Spanish TV station Movistar. His videos on the Movistar YouTube channel were always the most viewed. This really sucks that I probably won’t get to see this since it’s a Spanish tv network but maybe I’ll get to see some @AlextheRef The average fan does not respect Lahoz. He is a huge joke among pretty much all European soccer fans from what I’ve seen. People may say in passing that he is good at foul recognition but his theatrics sour him to all fans Edit: apparently Spanish fans think he’s on real Madrid payroll. Saw this hilarious photo on Twitter
Anyone know who will be getting the UEFA Super Cup this year? Taylor and Oliver have already done it and are out because Man City is in it. I would say Makkelie, but he's probably out due to his farcical 2CT red card he gave a Sevilla player in the semi-final. Marciniak has done it. Maybe Vincic or Turpin? Or Orsato as he hasn't done it.
Soares Dias, Zwayer and Letexier would be my top three guesses for Super Cup. But it's really a crapshoot. A lot of different people available with similar status/situations. I think there are probably 10 names on the Elite list that could go there and not be considered a surprise. The second leg of the UCL third qualifying round have leaked early. No one on those matches could get the Super Cup. The names there that otherwise would have been plausible are: Gözübüyük and Jovanovic, so that eliminates two. Kovacs has a leg 1 match, which should probably also eliminate him. Same for Bastien and Ekberg, but don't think they'd have been serious candidates anyway.
Makkelie receives the Golden card, after being elected by 35 former Orange internationals as the best Eredivisie referee in 2022-2023.
I knew Pepe got sent off before searching for this video. When I saw the act, I just presumed it was an easy 2CT. I've got to say, given the ultimate amount of force here, I was a bit surprised VAR went with a recommendation for VC. I should make the stipulation that I 100% believe it's VC and glad he was sent off. But we all know which direction the game has been going in. If that gets missed in a WC match... what does a VAR do? I don't know the answer. And Pepe is the undercard relative to what happens with Conceicao.
Fascinating. All in all, from the clips, it seemed like all the cards were correct. You could probably quibble and say that maybe he should have found a red card earlier to get them to stop hacking each other, but there didn't seem to be any blatant or obvious red cards not given. Couple of questions/thoughts: 1. The VAR intervention on Pepe is so fascinating in that you're not getting that outcome in many leagues around the world or you won't always. I doubt EPL or MLS VARs would recommend an OFR for that these days. It's clearly violent conduct according to the Laws, but is that violent conduct in the modern game anymore? Are we getting an OFR for that in MLS or the EPL or even in the CL? We've seen professional referees and VARs use mental gymnastics to only give yellows for head butts, two handed shoves during a dead ball, stamps on the chest, etc. 2. The disallowed Porto goal in stoppage time for handling via VAR? Is that part of the APP or not? Was that a correct OFR? 3. Sergio Conceicao might be the most of the control manager in all of Europe and that's saying something. It looked like he refused to leave after his red card and basically dared/forced the referee to abandon the match.
Yes, yes it is, and yes. Why wouldn't it be. The Porto player controls the ball with his arm, it drops to his feet, he passes it to a teammate who dribbles, shoots and scores. Seems to be the prototypical example of an APP handball. Am I missing something?
No thats my fault. I got confused and I didn't watch the video clearly. I thought the handling occurred much further back in the build up and not immediately in the lead up which would make it not part of APP if it was an accidental handball. But if you hypothetically deemed that handling accidental and not deliberate and a teammate didn't immediately score from that handling than it's not part of the APP? Right? For example, he controls the ball in his own penatly area (accidently) and then go the length of the field and score. That wouldn't be part of the APP as accidental handballs are only reviewable if it's immediate. Obviously since it's a deliberate handling (which it was in the play) then it's part of the APP no matter where or when the attacker handles the ball as long as the team keeps possession after the handling. Complete brain fart and dumb question on my end.
This is almost correct. If it's accidental handball, makes the pass, and the teammate scores... not an offence. Only if it's accidental handball and the player that had the accidental handball scores "immediately". (ie, drops to foot, touches ball to side, shoots and scores).
ATH:RMA After VAR review, no PK. How? Are we really taking the position that once you get a shot off you’re free to be fouled? https://streamable.com/vrusdc?src=player-page-share
Article in Italian about how Rocchi and the referees prepare to deal with racism this season. https://gianlucadimarzio.com/it/razzismo-rocchi-serie-a-intervista-news
I used to watch Getafe regularly when BeIN Sports had the Spanish first division contract because they consistently presented an officiating challenge, especially under Bordalás. And now Bordalás is back in charge. I notice the fourth official for this match is a Primera Federación referee (the third division in the Spanish pyramid). Thrown to the wolves. Bordalás vs Xavi would be a handful for any first division referee in that role, which they don’t even play anymore now that they’ve moved to VAR.
So Spain uses third division referees as 4ths on La Liga because of the drain on resources into VOR? Wow. What's the normal path now for a new La Liga referee? I mean obviously they do second division whistles, but do they get eased into La Liga with 4ths, too?
I'd have to look into it. I don't see first division referees as first division fourths. I think the majority are second division referees, and this particular appointment surprised me. Second division also has VAR and this year, 22 clubs.
I hyped up the resource drain when it looked like AARs would be the wave of the future. And I think it’s one reason they didn’t catch on domestically. But it seems like it’s finally coming to fruition now with the expansion of VAR to second divisions. There just aren’t enough competent bodies.
El Rayo were you the one who sent the link to the La Liga ref reports? Unfortunately it looks like RFEF locked users out of seeing them now, unless they just changed the link. Also I'm grabbing the Getafe/Barcelona match to watch in full since you guys said it is exciting.
Try this link for the match reports. Go to Primera División and then click on "Actas de partidos de la jornada en curso." Here's the Getafe vs Barcelona report.
