I've had that though tumbling in my head for the past few weeks, and I'm not sure she was really a big mistake, or even that much of a mistake. She was running as a "third-term candidate," which has only been won once in the last how many years (100?) She was not Mondale nor Dukakis, and probably on par with Gore and Kerry. She doesn't have the personality of GW Bush or Obama, and certainly that is why she lost in 2008 - Obama is more charismatic. And that is one of the factors with which she lost v. 45. And even then, it was very, very close. Consider that she won the popular vote, but only lost the election in three strategic states by a total of 100,000 votes. And in two of those states, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, the districts have been court challenged and won in favor of Dems (Wisconsin so far). And, on top of that, despite all the dedicated Republicans and Clinton haters and racists and sexists, it took the Comey letter, a letter announced only because he believed what most of the rest of us did, that Clinton was going to win. Clinton was never going to have an Obama-type win, and she still almost did.

I don't think it was a big mistake, but who else was threre? Sanders? O'Malley? And then who? And as I think about it, the only person who she really could have lost to was the person she did. Rubio was too new. Cruz is not a good public leader, and not charismatic. Jeb! maybe, but there would have been Bush-family weariness. Things were just set against anybody who would have been the Dem nominee, and it happened to be a long-standing controversial figure as nominee.

    3.

    Coolidge 1928, FDR 1940, Bush 1988.

Of course, the Dems also won in 1944 and 1948.
